Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the fell 0.52%, while the index fell 1.15%, and the index fell 2.26%.

The best performers of the session on the were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:), which rose 1.64% or 1.52 points to trade at 94.30 at the close. Meanwhile, Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:) added 0.73% or 1.49 points to end at 205.06 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:) was up 0.70% or 1.02 points to 146.04 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Nike Inc (NYSE:), which fell 2.61% or 2.82 points to trade at 105.11 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:) declined 2.32% or 2.22 points to end at 93.64 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:) was down 2.28% or 4.08 points to 175.02.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cboe Global Markets Inc (NYSE:) which rose 2.26% to 121.19, Martin Marietta Materials Inc (NYSE:) which was up 2.00% to settle at 313.58 and Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:) which gained 1.94% to close at 107.96.

The worst performers were Twitter Inc (NYSE:) which was down 11.25% to 32.67 in late trade, DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:) which lost 6.92% to settle at 17.07 and Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 6.70% to 70.20 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kaspien Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:) which rose 169.96% to 6.81, Pliant Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 159.01% to settle at 23.00 and La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co (NASDAQ:) which gained 81.12% to close at 6.14.

The worst performers were Swvl Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:) which was down 24.12% to 5.16 in late trade, TherapeuticsMD Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 19.73% to settle at 7.61 and Freeline Therapeutics Holdings Plc (NASDAQ:) which was down 18.92% to 0.90 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2206 to 875 and 107 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2895 fell and 975 advanced, while 148 ended unchanged.

Shares in La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co (NASDAQ:) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 81.12% or 2.75 to 6.14.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.21% to 26.17.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.62% or 10.85 to $1,731.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.18% or 1.24 to hit $103.55 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.43% or 0.46 to trade at $106.56 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 1.36% to 1.00, while USD/JPY rose 1.00% to 137.43.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.09% at 107.99.
