SCHUYLERVILLE, NY – The Schuylerville boys’ basketball team scratched and clawed their way to an early lead against Queensbury on Tuesday night. As the game progressed, the Black Horses seemed to get more and more comfortable.

“Queensbury did a pretty good job. They were speeding us up a little bit and it was just a matter of trying to settle in and find a better rhythm as a team,” said Schuylerville coach Matt Steinfort. “We had to make the easy plays and I felt like we had better composure in the second half.”

The Black Horses defeated the Spartans by a score of 58-41, as they made the most of a strong fourth quarter.

Ryan Dow provided much of the offense early in the game. He scored ten of Schuylerville’s twelve first-quarter points. The senior guard went on to score 19 in the game.

“Early on, Ryan did a great job of getting to the rim,” Steinfort said. “He was able to finish pretty consistently around the rim.”

At the half, Schuylerville was clinging on to a 24-21 lead.

Lukas Sherman did the bulk of the scoring late in the game. The sophomore forward scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, with nine in the fourth quarter.

“Lukas, all of a sudden, got some looks inside down low,” Steinfort said. “He was able to take advantage of some of those opportunities, especially late in the game.”

Those looks from Sherman finally helped Schuylerville attain a double-digit lead. The fourth quarter was the most productive offensively for the Black Horses, scoring 18 in the period while holding the Spartans to just eight.

Schuylerville did a good job, as a team, of getting to the free throw line, but they struggled to make the most of those opportunities. They went 16-for-29 from the line as a team. On the other hand, Queensbury wasn’t helping themselves out too much either. The Spartans were 1-for-11 from the line as a team.

In addition to Dow’s 19 points and Lukas Sherman’s 18, Owen Sherman scored nine points and Carson Partick scored seven.

Deondre Guignard led Queensbury with 12 points. Ryan Blanchard was next up with ten.

Schuylerville is next scheduled to face Amsterdam on January 14 at home at 7 p.m. Queensbury will travel to Johnstown on January 14 at 7 p.m.
